The term ‘British’ does not refer to the British isles. The Irish people do not recognise the term ‘British Isles’. It is not widely used anymore because anybody new to the term will take it as the islands belonging to Britain. The reason the name was changed was because of the Irish government requesting for it therefore it is down to politics.
