In 1989 they were known as the British Lions…so Stamrer Smith was just calling them what they were at the time. it was not until the 1997 tour that they were officially name changed to the the British and Irish Lions.

I watched this in the early hours with my dad. Class. Not quite sure why Nigel Starmer Smith insists on calling the Lions “The British Isles” all the time. I’m sure no other commentator before or since has done that.

Thanks so much for posting this. I suddenly remembered that last passage of play when the lions almost scored as Australia ran from behind the posts. Lets hope we do as well next year.

When the 4 home nations stop our in-fighting we actually get on bloody well !
I recall Finlay Calder and Dean Richards reportedly partying after one calcutta cup match long into the night, throwing the calcutta cup to each other across the street! It got damaged and needed repairing.
Calder,Teague, Winterbottom, – we simply don’t have players to match them nowadays. 2009 Lions is going to be interesting.
