does changing the colour of a logo avoid copyright laws?
hello, im looking for a lion logo, like the british lion crest as a logo for my company. Can I change the colour of another companys logo legally?
You can modify the logo for your purposes if and only if it cannot be mistaken by a compete and prudent person as being the same.

Colour is only one factor. Copyright infringement can be fairly complicated from both ends. Adopting and modifying a heraldic crest should be pretty safe.

What you can do is alter it in such a way that it only looks like it is related but is definitely not the same.
I’ve seen a movie company that uses a roaring lioness to start their films. (not mgm).
Also it depends on how generic the image is. My suggestion- not only change the color but also alter the mane and tail, also remove the crown.
Another good place to go for ideas is a tattoo parlor. even if the tattooer only traces there’s a great artist somewhere close by.

I doubt changing the color would be enough. If the company you took it from shows that you simply took their logo and changed the color it would be pretty decent proof of stealing their trademark.
